To Lawn or not to Lawn
This is the time of year when I remember why I live in the northeast.
Brilliant blue sky, sunshine, crisp air...ah...
I revel in these few days, these perfect days of light and balance, when the sun seems to cast a yellow glow over even the grass.
Such idyllic beauty is not lost on a woman who can't mow her lawn and is in the running for the Most Interesting Wildlife Refuge Lawn that the neighborhood has ever seen.
Yesterday, driving into the driveway I noticed squirrels bounding through the grass.
A fox hunted in our back yard, pouncing on whatever foxes pounce on.
Deer drink from the bird bath.
The scene is idyllic--if you aren't a suburbanite.
We tend to love it, and it has been freeing.
We decided to just let the lawn go and see what happened.
Eight weeks into the experiment, our lawn was beyond shaggy.
It was Meadow Material.
We watched from within the house, from the deck, and from the driveway.
Sunday I reclaimed the rose gardens, weed wacking at will.
It was a pretty funny sight: Aidan and I out there in sunglasses while I hacked away.
Those who know us well think it funny: Brian likes to cook. I like to do the yard work.
It works.
All this was lost on Kellen who didn't really seem to care.
His big news is that he said hi today...or at least a word that sounded like hi.
He also has a skin rash, which means we are going to Burlington...
I don't think it's the Dreaded rash, but it is annoying.
Babies + tender skin = rash.
I am just hoping that it can be cleared up quickly...antibiotics if need be...creams, whatever.
I will add it to our list for the Skin Rash Year--2006--the year that we had it All.
In terms of skin afflictions anyway.
For now, I'm off to put our older guy to bed...He's playing on the computer...
Actually all of us are now on the computer, which is pretty funny.
One wonders what we could do with the lawn--should we all decide to spend an hour mowing and weeding in tandem.
I guess that at least the wild animals are glad that we will never find out.
