Skateboarding Update
To those who thought it was A) Hysterical B) a Passing Fad or C) A recipe for a Broken leg, I thought I owed you all an update on the Skateboard Venture.
I might start another blog called that, the Skateboard Venture.
Because skateboarding is teaching me more about society and life than I ever imagined!
It's amazing. Skateboarding has turned all my assumptions upside down and made me look at life and gender roles and labeling in a Whole New Way.
* * *
One thing I love is that people do double takes when they see me on my board.
Some people laugh.
Other people seem to respect it.
Other people are amused--but not in a condescending way.
Others are offended.
* * *
My student said yesterday, "hey wait a minute, why are you doing this? Are you trying to play with our ideas about stereotypes?"
That was interesting, I thought.
* * *
But really, I am just in love with skateboarding. I went from someone who didn't really think much about skateboarding to being Totally and Utterly in Love with it. If I don't skate, I feel as if my day is not complete.
I skated five miles this past Monday, and it felt great.
Skating is like skiing but without snow.
It is an activity where I feel completely free and completely in the moment, on top of my game. If I'm not, then I am down...which is not a good thing.
To make a long story short, I am absolutely enamored with skateboarding. It is the best.
