On Children

I was thinking today of the most important and best days of my life.
If I had to name a few, what would they be?
Here are mine, in order of importance, the most important being first:

1) Birth of child #1: amazing, fulfilling, so life changing.
2) Birth of child #2, all of the above and then this richness and tenderness piled on top of that.
3) The day that I met Brian at Victoria Station in London because I think I knew I was in over my head (and that ended up being a good thing in terms of love).
4) The day that Brian and I started dating, New Year's Eve, new love, new year, new decade: 1990.
5) Wedding.
6) Days spent in Middlebury with Brian in late 1980s and early 1990s. Days of fall foliage and snow and quiet and dorm life and friends and nachos and beer and walking through cemeteries and vibrant campus life. The magic of Vermont.
7) Our entire trip XX in 1992. Camping in Santa Fe and Montana and discovering America.
8) Mornings of my early marriage: waking into coffee shops and cafes and long languid trips to Bagel shops with Brian to read the paper and eat bagels for at least an hour.

Those were my favorite days. Oddly the big milestones like graduations from high school, college, graduate school: None of those made my list. They were important days but not my favorite ones.

And here are my favorite days with Kellen this year:

1) Snowy days, quiet winter days, nursing and watching movies and snuggling and getting to know one another.
2) Days when Kellen is in a good mood and is laughing: April days of first laughs, first smiles.
3) All his early cooing...his mewing at birth and his gentle cooing noises, which he still does but now they are more like words. He actually said goo goo ga ga today (how uninventive!)

And here we are at a big milestone for the family with Brian's big election day nex week. We are nervous and expectant as new parents would be. Everything that happens to us now in our lives hinges on this one day. If Brian's campaign is successful there is one set of choices. If not, there is another set. It is interesting. No matter what happens, adventures await.

May you all reflect on your favorite days--

Love and peace--.
