Learning to Pump

No, this isn't a post about a hard rock song or a post about...well...what it might seem to be about.
This is about a skating technique called pumping, which is when you propel yourself using a gyrating motion. Basically, you gyrate the board, causing it to move forward without putting your foot on the ground.
Today I was heading out of class into the twilight, and three students were skating.
I said hello and passed on before I thought to ask them about pumping.
"Hey do you guys know how to pump?" I yelled back at their startled faces.
"What?" one asked.
"Pump," I repeated.
"Oh yeah," one student replied.
He then jumped on my board and showed me how it's done: lots of turning to create force, which pulls one forward.
I thanked him and headed on.
"Have fun," he said.
"Have fun too," I said, chuckling all the way down the street, chuckling at this fun new hobby of mine, at the connections that I make through it.
