Making Comfrey
Well, it's Friday night and while many of my students are most likely out partying, I am unwinding by making herbal concoctions.
Maybe the almost full moon will add some Goodness.
Every summer I make an herbal salve to see us through the winter. This year, I'm a little late, but since frost is forecasted for tonight, I figured I'd better Get To It. The ingredients consist of herbs from my garden, namely comfrey. This year I've added nettles and garlic as well for extra oomph. This is the salve we will use on most of our cuts, scrapes, and bumps.

The microwave just tinged, so I probably should get back to the whole project before the beeswax hardens.
Making comfrey is my annual tradition--up there with packing away summer clothing and spring cleaning. This is one way I mark the seasons coming and going, the twist and pull of tides and time.

Here's the recipe should any of you wish to make some:
Take a good amount of herbs (comfrey leaves) and cover with olive oil. Infuse over low heat for 3 to 5 hours.
Let cool.
Add anything else you want to like scents or oils.
Melt the beeswax.
Heat the comfrey in the microwave (2 minutes) and pour into a glass jar (baby food jars are great for this).
Add some beeswax until it is the right consistency. (To check this, dip a spoon into the concotion and cool this off in the freezer. If the mixture has too much beeswax it will be too hard to spread once it cools).

I have to say that comfrey is the best thing for babies' rashes and diaper dilemmas.
We swear by the stuff.
Plus it is pure love, too, mother love: the best kind of love unadulterated and unconditional.

Happy day before the Harvest Moon...May your kitchens be filled with sweetness and warmth.
