Trying New Things

Out of the blue on this gray day when I have had a headache all afternoon, our old babysitter just popped in to say hi.
She came at a particularly unannounced moment, post-dinner, but pre-tea...
And she came with her high spirits and wonderful energy...Good medicine!
We were all ecstatic to see her; it had been so long.
She was/is like part of the family--not just a babysitter.
She is learning to play fiddle, so she brought in her violin and played for us, and I skateboarded for her.
We got to trade our new passions.
She's also learning to knit, which I love to do.
She reminds me that we are never too old to take up new passions, to have new loves.
It is interesting because so many people older than 35 exclaim, "oh but aren't you worried you will hurt yourself?" about my new skateboarding endeavor.
Brian heard something on NPR that people over 35 biologically are no longer inclined to Try New Things.
This made me feel a little sad.
For them, that is.
I'm glad that my biology isn't tricking me into Going That Particular Route.
But it is interesting. The younger set thinks my skateboarding thing is cool, but my friends my age and older think it is slightly insane.
Not that it matters at all; it doesn't.
But it is interesting.

In the New Things department, I also took some hula lessons when I was in Maine on vacation...from a friend's daughter, Evie. Thank you Evie! She rocks, and she is really good at hula. She spent 9 months in Hawaii. Hula is fun, but it is super harder than it looks. Try moving your hips while keeping your shoulders really still...Hard!

Back to skateboarding: I was researching longboarding today, and I found that some people go REALLY Fast on longboards, up to 40 mph on hills. Now that seems insane to me. I would definitely need protective gear like skateboarding body armor to even think about trying anything that radical.
I think I'll stick to my 15 mph speeds...nice and slow.
But not too slow.
