PoJazz ... and a Jazz Baby

Last night we went to Johnson so I could perform in my Poetry Jazz group...
The event was held in a large auditorium at Johnson State College, where I used to teach.
We even had a smoke machine going...and a large band, more than seven musicians...
It was super fun to be back up on stage; it has been a really long time since I did anything in a theater.
I love the hush of the theater, the sacred feeling that it is a place of magic.
Aidan enjoyed watching the performance and so did Kellen who rocked back and forth and made some loud noises...
It was Pretty Cute.
Most astonishing, I think, was how much being in Vermont felt like Being Home.
Vermont will always be the Home of My Spirit, I suppose, and Burlington will always be a home to me.
Even when I lived in Fletcher, Burlington was the closest, biggest cultural center...
So driving into town--or even going northeast up toward Johnson--just feels like being inside an old pair of jeans, worn just right and just so.
Part of me wants to move back...but I guess we have other places to go, other places to see.
But October in Vermont: It almost doesn't get any better than the bright blue sky, the melting gorgeous light, the trees just beginning to turn, and the clarity of the air, a crisp quality that is all Vermont.
I am glad Aidan was born there...and wish that Kellen had been.
His whole life, Aidan can identify as being a Vermonter.

In the end, we may move to Canada only to move back to Vermont. I want to explore the Canadian opportunity that is presenting itself...because life is short, and life is an adventure.
But Vermont may just always lure us back in our retirement, back to its cobblestone streets, to the magic of cafes, and people who are artistically energetic enough to form and perform in Jazz Poetry Groups. There is a vitality there, a magic, that permeates the place.
Even in the middle of winter, that spirit prevails in the hush of winter candles in church windows, in the warmth of a coffee house, where the musicians arrive to shake off the cold and share themselves.

Beautiful! The spirit and essence of Vermont. My brother, who has sailed around the world twice, and to various other locations numerous times, believes we have a magnetic and spiritual home. For him, it's New England. And, as I write this during a two-week vacation to California, I know that for me too it is New England. Adventure and travel are marvelous and enriching. It gives me opportunities to observe the environments and intrinsic home connections of others. This country is majestic, beautiful, and awesome! Rachel
